Previous - Page 15
06/14/2011 - USA I'm looking to see if anyone one served with my dad, PFC John J Mattson of 29th Infantry 175th Division HQ Company on June 6 1944. He started his basic training in Camp Blanding Fla, and was also honorably discharged there as well. He’s still with us but never talked much about the war. We are very proud of ALL who served and paid the ultimate price of freedom we all enjoy. I would just like to know the history of his military duty. Wayne J Mattson

04/26/2011 - USA Hi All, My father in law, Ray Connell, Livonia, NY was in the 29th.  I believe the 175 regiment but do not know the troop.  He was part of the cavalry reconnaissance that started it's journey in Fort Riley, Kansas.  Then trained in Glasgow, Scotland before setting their horses free in the hills of Scotland and becoming a mechanized unit.  From there he ended up in southern England before crossing the channel in the second wave to hit the Normandy beaches.  Ray would share with me stories of Normandy, St. Lo, the submarine pens at Brest, and running ammunition from the port at Antweerp to the battle of the bulge.  His stories also included buddies like, Butch Condero, Eddie "the rabbitt", Joe Lascanek, and maybe most of all his "Podner" (partner) who was from Oklahoma and was a "mountain of a man" that was going to  play football for the University of Oklahoma when the war came along. Ray and "Podner" ran ammunition together in Antweerp and I recall that "Podner" settled down after the war out west (Las Vegas maybe).  I have included some bits and pieces of stories in the hopes that something will draw a connection to those out there.  I miss my friend dearly, I am a better person for knowing him and would love to find some connection to his past.  Thank you, Chad Henderson.
