1st Lt. MATTHEW E. DALEY

116TH REGIMENT

2ND BATTALION

COMPANY F

Silver Star citation: On 6 June 1944, during the assault on the beaches of France, 1st Lieutenant Daley was wounded; nevertheless, he skillfully led his men across the beach without further casualties. At one point when his section was halted by enemy wire obstacles, he directed the laying of a bangalore torpedo which breached a path for the advance of his unit. Still declining evacuation, 1st Lieutenant Daley, on the following day, led a task force and cleared remants of the enemy holding positions on the cliffs overlooking the beach, killing ten and capturing twenty-two. His actions reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service.
